{"id":6711,"date":"2026-07-01T15:16:54","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T15:16:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.abo-group-france.fr\/?p=6711"},"modified":"2026-07-09T15:32:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T15:32:24","slug":"tunnels-and-monitoring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.abo-group-france.fr\/en\/tunnels-et-auscultation\/","title":{"rendered":"Tunnels and monitoring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abo-group-france.fr\/en\/dynaopt-monitoring-subsidiary\/\">\u2018Auscultation\u2019 is a project in its own right<\/a> in a tunnel project, whether deep or underground, to prevent and manage risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the message conveyed by the teams at ABO Dynaopt to professionals attending the continuing professional development course on \u00abGeotechnics for Tunnels\u00bb at the \u00c9cole des Ponts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why inspecting a tunnel is essential<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Geological and hydrogeological conditions at the site<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Geotechnical characteristics of the strata traversed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Site-specific constraints in tunnelling, from shallow urban structures to deep tunnels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could therefore minimise the need for auscultation. However, <strong>Monitoring a tunnel is essential to meet safety requirements and minimise damage to the structure <\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The geological and geotechnical data for the site are complex: some geological details may appear minor and risk going unnoticed during site surveys\u2026  yet their impact on the project may be significant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Models tend to simplify representations of natural conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monitoring to understand the behaviour of the structure <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To auscultate means <strong>to measure changes in physical parameters in order to understand, and indeed control, the behaviour of the structure and its impact on its environment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey therefore covers the geotechnical influence zone (ZIG):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Neighbouring structures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sloping ground<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The book itself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:13px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The type of structure (deep or subsurface), the construction method and the nature of the ground will influence the scope of the parameters to be measured:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Geometric parameters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hydraulic parameters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mechanical parameters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What a tunnel inspection checks for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, a physical examination allows the following aspects to be assessed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Design assumptions \u2013 Initial state\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Behaviour of tunnels, galleries and structures under construction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Impact caused by tunnel excavation and the construction of structures <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:17px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This training is essential to remind us that health checks are not an end in themselves: they are a tool for managing and preventing risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"796\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abo-group-france.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/LinkedIn_EcolePonts_VISUEL-796x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Tunnels and monitoring: a project in its own right\" class=\"wp-image-6716\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.abo-group-france.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/LinkedIn_EcolePonts_VISUEL-796x1024.jpg 796w, https:\/\/www.abo-group-france.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/LinkedIn_EcolePonts_VISUEL-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/www.abo-group-france.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/LinkedIn_EcolePonts_VISUEL-768x988.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.abo-group-france.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/LinkedIn_EcolePonts_VISUEL-9x12.jpg 9w, https:\/\/www.abo-group-france.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/LinkedIn_EcolePonts_VISUEL.jpg 1058w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px\" \/><\/figure>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>L&rsquo;auscultation est un projet \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re dans un projet de tunnel, profond ou en subsurface, pour pr\u00e9venir et g\u00e9rer les risques.
